Book Review: KNOTT'S BERRY FARM: THE EARLY YEARS

Although I typically focus on the Disney parks, every now and again a book comes along about another Southern California attraction I have to shove everything out of the way and to dive in. Jay Jennings has written an excellent book about the early history of Knott's Berry Farm. Knott's is credited as the first theme park and a major influence on Walt Disney. Located in nearby Buena Park, Knott's has an amazing history going all the way back to 1923. If you recall, 1923 was also significant as it was the year Walt Disney moved to Hollywood.
The book starts with a look at Walter and Cordelia Knott's early years. In 1920, Walter started to farm a variety of berries on 20 acres and decided to boost business with a stand along Highway 39 (Beach Blvd.). Business was pretty good but not quite enough. Walter loved berries and kept looking for the next big thing. Walter found that in 1932 when he began harvesting his signature Boysenberry. To increase revenues, his wife began selling chicken dinners on her wedding china in 1934. By 1938 the Knott's were serving more than 4,000 chicken dinners on a typical Sunday.
The lines were so long Walter decided to find a way of entertaining the crowds. So he took inspiration from his love of the old west and built a ghost town. The book does an excellent job of detailing the rapid growth of Knott's Berry Farm and all of the amazing attractions, many which are no longer there or buried under layers without recognition. There is also a look at many of the personalities who left their stamp on the park.
Things change and in Knott's case the big change came in 1968. But that time, vandalism forced the Knott's to put a fence around the ghost town and charge an admission. But this also brought new attractions such as one of the first flume rides, an early looped rollercoaster, a parachute ride (which used to the be scariest ride I have ever been on), soapbox racers, and many more.
If you are a fan of Knott's Berry Farm or old Southern California attractions, I could not recommend this book more highly.
The book is loaded with historic photos.

A LOOK AT THE SAMLAND LIBRARY
I am off to Walt Disney World for a "research" this week. Friday night I enjoyed the Magic Kingdom's Halloween party and then the rest of the week I have been eating and drinking myself silly at the food and wine fest. Got to read something on the plane right? This week will be filled with little book reviews. Let's see what is in my collection at the moment:
